Grandmother Eberna - Lyv’s paternal grandmother (Sten’s mother). 73 years old when the story begins. She is a voice of reason and support system for Lyv. She has chosen to stay behind in Bowerbury and help raise Lyv, as not to abandon her, rather than move to Sagebrush Keep with her son and Marijen. She is killed during the Destruction of Bowerbury. Sten protests Eberna staying in Bowerbury: “she doesn’t have time to dedicate to anything except for her training,” but Eberna’s persistence and stubbornness wins. Eberna becomes a mentor, mother-figure, and really everything else for Lyv. Eberna is killed, along with General Hyrock, Lyv’s other mentor and confidant. (this allows us to be more empathetic with Lyv and her loss of Bowerbury and its people, it grounds her in Bowerbury, making it more relevant to her).
